One day Wilbur Lee called a meeting.

“This morning the Father revealed that the rapture is so close …” He showed us with his thumb and index finger nearly touching.

All right! This is what we have been waiting for! I thought. “When is the Father coming?” I blurted.

“Just a minute!” Wilbur Lee held up his hand.

My face turned red. That was dumb of me, I scolded myself.

“It is coming very soon!” he reemphasized. “In fact, it is so close now that you must quit making a living. Working for a living is simply tying you down too much. You must be free to go at a moment’s notice. The Father has His work for you. You must be available to work for Him.”

I heard several of the men suck in their breath.

“Is that so?” Manass wondered. “How will we feed our families and pay our bills?”

“Don’t worry, the Father will see to that,” he consoled. “The Scripture says that He feeds the sparrows, so He will certainly care for you if you are faithful and obedient to Him.”

“Should we sell the cows?” Toby wondered.

“Yes, the Father wants you to sell the cows. You may keep the broilers though,” he answered.

Wow, that’ll be nice! I thought happily. No more milking! This was sounding better all the time.

The next morning Dad pushed back his chair from the breakfast table, removed his toothpick, and said, “Toby, will you call a trucker this morning to take the cows to the Shipshewana sale barn tomorrow? I want you boys to clean them up a bit this morning after you milk.”

“Oh, they’ll be going that soon?” I responded, surprised at the urgency.

“Yes. When the Father commands us to do something, we must obey right away,” Mom put in. “We have been too slow in the past. This is one reason the Father hasn’t come to take us to paradise already.”

“Yes, I’d say you’re right,” agreed Toby. “We must obey immediately.”

The following day a trucker hauled our twenty dairy cows to the sale barn.

“May we go to the sale barn and watch them sell?” I asked Dad while waiting for the cattle truck.

Dad paused a bit before answering. “No, I don’t think we should. We must be careful not to mingle with the Amish yet; we need to become more established in the Father’s teachings before we associate with them too much.”

I knew he was thinking about their episode with Alva and Elnora. Wilbur Lee had made it clear that we were to remain to ourselves for a while, at least. I couldn’t help feeling a surge of loneliness.
